I loved my OB- Duke Women's Health Associates, so I just ended up staying with them and hoping the hospital would be great. They tell you to schedule a tour after 20 weeks.... So I finally end up going on a tour- and let's just say, I didn't get the right vibe for my delivery. They're an excellent hospital- but there were just too many red flags for us. HUGE long walk from the parking deck (not free) to the hospital, crazy busy (I'm talking 6 elevators running all at once and all packed), seemed like a maze, was a bit loud and jarring, seemed a bit dreary, and we just didn't get a great feel.
We had been reading these books (which I'll give a review on later) Husband-Coached Childbirth and Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth- and thought that we might want a midwifery birth. We tour Baby and Company in Cary and it too was wonderful.
So here I am- with a tough decision to make. Birthing center or hospital birth? It is a choice I never thought I would make. We have obviously invested a lot in this child and don't want to put him at risk by not being at a hospital. However, my pregnancy has been happily uneventful and baby is very healthy, so why can't we deliver in a more comfortable environment where I have more control over the progression of my labor..
